In May 2014 Stuart travelled to Uganda as a guest of the Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA) to make a 25 minute documentary about the management of Mount Elgon National Park, which straddles the Uganda/Kenya border and encompasses 1,200 sq km and the largest volcanic caldera in the world. The resulting film, Reaching the peak, involved a four day return hike to the 4,321 m summit, Waggagi, during which Stuart was accompanied by a dozen rangers and a dozen porters plus eight young tourists.
The film, produced in Association with the International Union for Conservation of Nature, was finally screened at the World Parks Congress, held in Sydney in November 2014.
Reaching the peak, features interviews with a number of dedicated UWA rangers and explores some of the immense challenges the UWA face in their struggle to protect the park in the face of rapid climate change, encroachment by neighbouring communities and armed poachers.
In spite of the difficulties and the lack of resources, compared to wealthier countries the UWA rangers show a passion and dedication to their work alongside committed members of the community which today strongly support conservation efforts to protect the parks natural values for the benefit of future generations.
